"Purple and Green, Red and White......"

Last night my 3-year-old daughter "Alleluia" was singing the song we learned in our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd work that goes:
Purple and Green, Red and White
Are the Colors of the Year.
Purple and Green, Red and White
Remind Us of the Light.
Purple's for Preparation, White is for Celebration
Green is for the Growing Time, Red is for Pentecost........

If you want to keep things simple, just make small table runners for a child's prayer table in these colors.

So I decided to teach that song to two little friends who came over this morning.  Lent is just around the corner, and 2- and 3- year-olds (who may not notice much else at Mass) can surely be given this one assignment:  the next time you attend church, come back and tell me what color the priest was wearing!

If you're interested in making chasubles of your own, leave a comment and I'll try to describe how we made ours.  And if you'd like to order the song book that includes a CD, scroll down to Sing with Joy--this song is on it.

  1. I LOVE the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd chasubles! That song is great for learning about the liturgical colors. Thanks so much for sharing at Montessori Monday. I featured your post at the Living Montessori Now Facebook page and pinned it to my Godly Play and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Board at http://pinterest.com/debchitwood/godly-play-and-catechesis-of-the-good-shepherd/

  2. I love the little chasubles and have been looking for a pattern to make them. We have small liturgical runners for our celebration table/home altar but these are precious. If you have a pattern or could explain how to make them, I would greatly appreciate it.

  3. I am also looking for a pattern to make the chasubles so that my CCD class can learn them. Since I have 7 year old's I thought it would be best to have something they can touch and see. God bless your ministry.

  6. Amy, I'm glad you like them! The wooden prophet: I traced a figure that I saw while in training that I really liked, and then asked a friend with a saw to cut it for me. The icon: This was a surprise gift from a grateful recipient of the Our Lady of Fatima statue that my husband and I deliver to those who request it (part of our work in the Legion of Mary). A gentleman who wanted to thank us painted (or "wrote") this icon using a scrap of wood. Don't you love it?!

  7. Amy, I'm sorry--you may be asking about the other icon that is sometimes seen in our classroom. That was a gift purchased from The Printery House, which has a website at printeryhouse.org
